The new-home package: grading → certificate → sod, in one booking
Built for new-home owners in Edmonton's new subdivisions. Instead of lining up separate crews, one Kruse booking carries your lot through the whole sequence — and it's aimed squarely at the City of Edmonton deadline: the Final Grade Approval process is initiated by submitting a Lot Grading Certificate within 18 months of the building permit, under Drainage Bylaw 18093. Spring 2027 spots are being booked now, so lots coming due next year are covered well ahead of time.
01Lot grading & topsoilRough grade checked, screened topsoil supplied and spread, and the lot final graded to the approved plan — sloped for proper drainage away from the home.
→
02Final Grade CertificateWe coordinate the survey and certificate — a certified as-built plan prepared by a professional acceptable to the City, such as an Alberta Land Surveyor — and the lot is ready for City inspection.
→
03Sod installationAfter approval, fresh sod is laid on the graded topsoil with tight seams and clean edges. Trees, shrubs and beds to your builder's requirements can be added to the same package.
Not sure where your lot is in the process? Work through our Edmonton Final Grade Checklist — it lays out every City step in plain language.

How final grade approval works in Edmonton
In Edmonton, new homes need City-approved lot grading under Drainage Bylaw 18093. If the grade isn’t approved, your builder can hold your landscaping deposit. Here’s how we get it done:
1
Check your rough grade — and your deadlineWe confirm your lot’s rough grade status and what’s needed to finish. Per the City of Edmonton, the approval process starts by submitting a Lot Grading Certificate within 18 months of the building permit — don’t leave it to the last minute.
2
Topsoil & final gradingWe spread screened topsoil and grade it to the approved lot grading plan — sloped away from the foundation for drainage.
3
Survey & certificateThe lot is surveyed and a Final Grade Certificate is prepared: a certified as-built plan, on sod or topsoil, by a professional acceptable to the City (such as an Alberta Land Surveyor), shown on the approved Lot Grading Plan.
4
City inspection & approvalPer the City of Edmonton, an inspector usually visits within 10 business days. If deficiencies are found, they must be corrected within 60 days and a re-inspection arranged by calling 311 (fees may apply). Once approved, you can move ahead with sod and landscaping — and work toward getting your deposit released.
Process details above are from the City of Edmonton’s Final Grade Approval page. Don’t landscape before approval — grading and drainage are regulated under Edmonton Drainage Bylaw 18093.

Kruse Landscaping Ltd. is owned and run by Anthony Kruse — an Edmonton landscaper with 10 years of hands-on experience grading lots, laying sod, and building paver patios across the city. What started as a one-man operation has grown into an incorporated business that homeowners and home builders across Edmonton call when a yard needs to be finished properly.
Our specialty is the work that has to be done right the first time: final grade certificates graded to the approved plan and prepared for City inspection, so builders can release landscaping deposits, sod laid on properly prepared topsoil so it roots and stays green, complete builder requirement packages for new homes, and paver patios built on a compacted base that stays level through Alberta freeze–thaw. We also handle most other landscaping work — retaining walls, rock and flower beds, trees and shrubs, walkways, and yard renovations.
We work mostly just in Edmonton — the neighbourhoods, new subdivisions, soil conditions, and City grading rules we deal with every day are right here at home. And every project starts the same way: a free quote, in writing, before any work begins.

Why Edmonton calls Kruse
Final grade done to the plan — topsoil and grading sloped for drainage and ready for survey, so the certificate process runs as smoothly as possible.
Sod that takes — proper ground prep and levelling before a single roll goes down, plus a watering guide so your new lawn roots fast.
Patios built on a real base — excavation and compaction done properly, so pavers stay flat and solid through Alberta winters.
One call for builders — full builder-requirement packages: grade, topsoil, sod, trees, and shrubs to spec, front and back.
You deal with the owner — Anthony prices the job, does the work, and walks the finished yard with you. Nothing gets lost in translation.

Are you still taking jobs this season, or should I book for spring 2027?
We’re almost wrapped up for this season and can only take a few more jobs before freeze-up, while the ground is still workable — if your job is urgent or has a builder deposit deadline, call and we’ll tell you straight if we can fit it in. Spring 2027 booking is now open: get a free quote now and lock in your spot so you’re first in line when the ground thaws.
What is a Final Grade Certificate, and do I need one?
If you bought a new home in Edmonton, the City requires your lot grading to be approved. A Final Grade Certificate is a certified as-built plan — prepared by a professional acceptable to the City, such as an Alberta Land Surveyor — showing your lot graded to the approved plan on sod or topsoil, with proper drainage. Without approval, your builder may hold back your landscaping deposit. We handle topsoil, final grading, and coordinate the certificate process.
How long do I have to get final grade approval in Edmonton?
According to the City of Edmonton, the Final Grade Approval application is initiated by submitting a Lot Grading Certificate within 18 months of the building permit. Lot grading in Edmonton is governed by Drainage Bylaw 18093 — so it pays to start early and not leave it until your builder deposit deadline is close. Source: City of Edmonton — Final Grade Approval.
How long does the City inspection take, and what if my lot doesn’t pass?
According to the City of Edmonton, an inspector usually visits within 10 business days of submission. If deficiencies are found, they must be corrected within 60 days and a re-inspection arranged by calling 311 (fees may apply). We grade to the approved plan in the first place so corrections are far less likely to be needed.
Should I do final grade before or after sod?
Final grade comes first. Sod laid before your grade is approved may have to be lifted if corrections are needed. The usual order is: rough grade approval → topsoil & final grade → certificate/City approval → sod and remaining landscaping.
Are you a real local contractor, or a referral service?
A real one. Kruse Landscaping Ltd. is an incorporated, owner-operated Edmonton company — you deal directly with owner Anthony Kruse, who prices the job, does the work, and walks the finished yard with you. You’re not handed off to an unknown third-party contractor.
When is the best time to install sod in Edmonton?
Sod can go down through most of the growing season — spring through early fall — as long as it gets consistent water while it roots. Fresh sod needs frequent watering for the first couple of weeks; we’ll leave you with a simple watering schedule.
Do you work with home builders?
Yes. Beyond one-off homeowner jobs, we complete full builder-requirement landscaping packages for new homes — grading, topsoil, sod, trees, and shrubs to spec.
How much does a project cost?
It depends on yard size, access, materials, and how much prep is needed — which is why every quote starts with a site visit and measurements. Quotes are always free and itemized, so you know exactly what you’re paying for before you commit to anything.
How long have you been landscaping?
10 years. Kruse Landscaping Ltd. is an incorporated Edmonton business, and most of our work is right here in Edmonton — final grade, sod, builder requirements, and paver patios.
Do paver patios hold up in Alberta winters?
Yes — when the base is done right. We excavate, compact a proper gravel base, and level a bedding layer before laying pavers, which is what keeps a patio flat through freeze–thaw cycles.

Bought a new home in Edmonton? Your lot grading has to be approved by the City — under Drainage Bylaw 18093 — and your builder may hold your landscaping deposit until it is. Here's the whole process in plain language, in order. Work through it and you'll know exactly where your lot stands.
Check your rough grade first
Final grade builds on rough grade. Before anything else, confirm your lot's rough grade status and what's needed to finish — and find your deadline (next step). Starting early keeps sod and the rest of your landscaping from being delayed.
Know your 18-month deadline
Per the City of Edmonton, the Final Grade Approval application is initiated by submitting a Lot Grading Certificate within 18 months of the building permit. Don't leave it to the last minute — survey, grading and inspection all take time.
Don't landscape before approval
Final grade comes before sod and landscaping. Sod laid before your grade is approved may have to be lifted if corrections are needed. The usual order is: rough grade approval → topsoil & final grade → certificate and City approval → sod and remaining landscaping.
Topsoil & final grade to the approved plan
Screened topsoil is spread and the lot is graded to the approved Lot Grading Plan — sloped away from the foundation so water drains properly. This is the hands-on grading work Kruse handles.
Survey & Final Grade Certificate
The lot is surveyed and a Final Grade Certificate is prepared: a certified as-built plan, on sod or topsoil, prepared by a professional acceptable to the City — such as an Alberta Land Surveyor — shown on the approved Lot Grading Plan. Kruse coordinates this step as part of the job.
City inspection — usually within 10 business days
Per the City of Edmonton, an inspector usually visits within 10 business days of submission. Grading to the approved plan in the first place is what makes this step go smoothly.
If deficiencies are found: fix within 60 days
If the inspection turns up deficiencies, they must be corrected within 60 days and a re-inspection arranged by calling 311 (fees may apply). Kruse can handle corrections — including fixing a previous grade that didn't pass.
Approved — then sod, landscaping & your deposit
Once the City approves your final grade, you can move ahead with sod and the rest of your landscaping — and work toward getting your builder landscaping deposit released.
Process details above are from the City of Edmonton's Final Grade Approval page. Lot grading in Edmonton is governed by Drainage Bylaw 18093.
